Most performers will have experienced some amount of stage fright at more than a few points in their careers, even the professionals. Its not at all abnormal for younger performers to feel a lot of nervousness from time to time, here’s ten tips on how to curb those performance anxieties 

 

1) Preparation

It's cliché and certainly overused, but practice truly does make perfect. Knowing your material inside and out is the surest thing to avoid any trip ups on stage. As difficult as it can be, it is often most beneficial to focus your rehearsal time on the weaker aspects of your performance keep you confident throughout. Familiarity breeds confidence! 

 2) Visualisation

Before going on stage it can be very beneficial to try and imagine what your perfect performance is going to look like. Picture yourself confident, in control and nailing it. Mental rehearsals can be just as useful for getting rid of stage fright. 

3) Breathe

Taking deep slow breaths and practicing breathing exercises offstage will calm your body and mind down whilst warming up your lungs for monologues, solos and dancing. Emotions and your breathing are closely linked so if you can control your breathing you should find it a lot easier to control any runaway emotions.

4) Embrace the Jitters 

A little nervousness is natural before any big event, especially when in front of an audience. Getting nervous is your body's way of preparing you for action so it's important not to fight that feeling. Instead it can be more useful to reframe anxiety as a form of excitement.

5)Positive Self-Talk 

You can often be your own worst enemy when it comes to confidence. It is important that you challenge your own negative thoughts with more positive affirmations. You are prepared, you are capable and you are gonna be the star of the show! 

6) Warm up your body 

You should engage in some physical warm up exercises before taking to the stage. A little stretching and yoga can go a long way in releasing any tension you might have in your body. You should also feel a lot more loose, comfortable and confident on stage. 

7) Connect with your audience 

Try not to shy away from your audience, they want you to succeed just as much as you do. Embracing their presence and maybe even playing into it will make it significantly easier to perform in front of them. 

8) Use movement to your advantage

Make sure all your movements have a purpose. Having more control over your body will make you feel and look a lot more relaxed and will ensure a successful performance.

9) Avoid Caffeine and Heavy Meals

Caffeine can increase jitters, and heavy meals can make you feel sluggish. Opt for light, balanced meals and stay hydrated. And don't have too much dairy before you sing! 

10) Learn from Each Experience

Every performance, whether successful or not, is a learning opportunity. After each show, take time to reflect on what went well and what you can improve. This constructive feedback can boost your confidence for the next time.

Remember, the key is not to eliminate nervousness entirely but to learn how to manage it effectively. Embrace the thrill of the stage, and let your passion for performing shine through.
